Gyeongju was the stage for a famous ‘school trip’ episode of 2 Days & 1 Night, but the whole city is a thousand-year open-air museum of the Silla kingdom. Cheomseongdae observatory, the Daereungwon royal tombs and the night-lit Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond are the signature sights.
On the slopes of Tohamsan sit Bulguksa Temple and the Seokguram Grotto, both UNESCO World Heritage. In town, Hwangnidan-gil lines hanok streets with cafes and shops.
Because the sights are spread across the downtown, Bulguksa and Bomun areas, an overnight stay with a bike or car works best.
